A group of nineteen students from two classes – Human Sexuality in ancient Greece and The History of Western Theatre – participated in a study abroad experience that included travel to Greece. The group traveled across Greece visiting many ancient sites including the Acropolis in Athens, the city of Sparta, and the ancient theatre at Epidaurus (Greek name Epídhavros).
The foot of the Acropolis, one of Greece’s most iconic locations, comes alive with street musicians. Musical styles range from traditional to modern, classical to jazz. Because of economic stresses, the musicians may be highly trained performers who are supplementing their income or amateurs who are trying to collect enough money to eat. This singer had found a shaded spot in which to play and sing and, as was typical of all the musicians, was happy to oblige my request to perform.
